A little bit about me…
Hello. I’m Robert Calkin, a native English-speaking freelance content creator and French to UK English translator based in Spalding, Lincolnshire, England.
I am delighted to offer English content creation, content marketing and content strategy. I assist companies with their website/blog content creation, as well as social media marketing and strategy. I have recently launched a social media strategy for my own business on LinkedIn.
Having 12 years’ translation experience, I operate as Calkin Global Communications. I am an Associate of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (membership number: 00023509). My key areas of expertise are marketing and law. I will take on marketing in the wine, leisure and tourism and fashion sectors, as well as a wide range of other fields.
I offer legal translation including contracts, property and succession. As part my website portfolio, I complete terms and conditions, terms of trading in addition to GDPR and other documents. I have also translated a variety of other contracts. I am a non-practising solicitor on the roll of solicitors in England and Wales which positions me well for such work.
I use SDL Trados Studio 2024 Freelance as my main translation software, having experience of Memsource Cloud. I am pleased to use all other translation tools and glossaries and work with all source document formats.
Since 2014, I have translated around 3.1 million words and proofread circa 450,000 words.
I hold a BA (Hons.) Law and French degree.

Tourism Marketing
I frequently complete French to UK English website/brochure marketing translation in the travel and tourism sector. The work covers hotels, bed and breakfasts and campsites (either full websites or summaries for third party tourism sites).
Projects comprise accommodation, services, catering/menus, swimming complexes, facilities, sports/leisure activities and tourist attractions. Destinations include France, Corsica, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. I’ve translated privacy and GDPR notices, standard terms and conditions, contact forms and other miscellaneous documents. I have also translated a PowerPoint presentation on a client’s digital offering.
I deal with translation, localisation and SEOs for European multilingual websites, using SDL Trados Studio (with translation memories and termbases). My word count to date in this sphere is in excess of 1.7 million words (from May 2016 to date).
Wine Marketing
I have also completed French to UK English translation of vineyard websites. This has included details of vineyard history, the winemaking process, vintages, wine-tasting and distribution. Associated documents have included terms of trading/legal notices.
I have undertaken translation, locaIization and SEOs, using SDL Trados Studio, translating in the region of 19,000 words since July 2016.
Fashion Marketing
I have previously undertaken marketing translation and MTPE in the high-end fashion sector, involving branded clothing advertising (2020 – 2022). For this work I used termbases and translation memories in Memsource Cloud, completing 186,200 words. I have also undertaken haute couture fashion proofreading (in excess of 450,000 words).
Non-Marketing Translation
My early translation career (from 2015 – 2019) included translation of journalism articles from French to English for the online division of a Brussels-based publication (circa 600,000 words). I also translated academic publications for a London-based publisher (circa 450,000 words).
